Santa Fe Photographic Workshops Announces First Ever Photography Contest

It's no secret that PMPN's favorite non-Pacific Northwest source for private photographic education is the Santa Fe Photographic Workshops. For many photographers, taking a workshop at Santa Fe is considered a highlight in their artistic careers.  The facility, staff, world-renown instructors and curriculum are under the discriminating and meticulous eye of its Director and Founder, Reid Callanan.  Reid's passion for art, photography and photographers has driven him to create an educational environment that has become the benchmark for all photographic workshops.

If you aspire to attend a workshop at the Santa Fe Photographic Workshops, here's the opportunity.  Reid has announced the Workshop's First-Ever Photography Contest.  Not only will your photography be reviewed by a panel of distinguished judges, but you could win a Santa Fe Workshop of your choice -- all expenses paid.

For many of us our families are a great source of photographic inspiration. In delight, and in heartache, they are our muse. We're looking for images that speak of FAMILY—in all its glory, from its humor to its quiet moments of grace.

Join our international community of photographers and share your photographs with our distinguished panel of judges. The experience will be rewarding. And the prizes are great!

PANEL OF JURORS
We are privileged to have such an esteemed panel of jurors to view the entries and select the contest winners.

Canon's Wonder Camera Displayed at World Expo 2010

We've attended auto shows for decades and been amazed by manufacturer's concept cars.  They gave us a glimpse of the future as envisioned by auto designers.  Although the later production cars didn't always look like the chrome-laden prototypes that were showcased on revolving stages with beautiful models, most of the technologies demonstrated did make it into the cars we drive today.

Now Canon has brought its vision of 2030 photography to Shanghai's World Expo 2010 in the form of a concept camera, the Wonder Camera.  A hand-held video of Canon's presentation at World Expo 2010 is available on YouTube.  The camera as shown in this video may never become reality, but having the opportunity to see a vision of future photography through the eyes of one of the most respected names in photography provides a wealth of food for thought and discussion.

Click HERE to see the YouTube video.  Note:  Be aware you have to endure a 30 second commercial before the Wonder Camera video begins.

ARTtrust™ Sets Up U.S. Operations in Vancouver, Washington

ARTrustonline.com is the portal to verificable print authenticity

In January, ARTtrust™ was launched in France.  This month, ARTtrust™ announced the opening of its United States’ headquarters in Vancouver, Washington.  And, PMPN’s Publisher, Tom Hubbard, has been selected to head up U.S. ARTtrust operations.  “I’m excited to have ARTtrust based in Vancouver and for the opportunity to bring a fool-proof print authentication solution to the U.S. fine art community.  The technology is totally unique and delivers immediate on-line verification of a print’s authenticity for the well being of the artist as well as the investment security of the collector.”

The ARTtrust Online (www.arttrustonline.com) print-authentication system is now available to protect the value of all types of art, including digital art, art reproductions, and photographic prints. For example, artists and photographers can use ARTtrust Online and the Bubble Tag™ solution to assure buyers that each print in an edition is unique and authentic. Auction houses, galleries, museums, and collectors can use ARTtrust to trace the ownership of each print over time. Registration reduces risks for owners and better protects artists’ rights.

“No matter what brand of pigment-ink printer is used to produce a photographic print or art reproduction, you can use ARTtrust Bubble Tags™ to ensure traceability and protect each print’s value,” explains Tom Hubbard, ARTtrust’s Director of Business Development in the U.S. “In addition to digital prints, Bubble Tags™ can also be used with traditional silver photography, lithographs, serigraphs, and other printed imagery.”

Although ARTtrust Bubble Tags can be applied to any art print, users of HP’s Designjet Z Professional Photo Printers with HP Vivera Pigment inks who want to provide an additional layer of assurance to collectors regarding the long-term investment value of their prints will discover that details about the longevity and durability of prints on popular media is automatically attached to the information that accompanies each ARTtrust Bubble-Tagged print. This critical life-expectancy data is drawn from testing conducted by the Wilhelm Imaging Research organization in Grinnell, IA.

How the Bubble Tag™ System Works

The ARTtrust Bubble Tag™ is a label in which a random set of air bubbles is encapsulated in a translucent polymer film. The tri-dimensional code in each Bubble Tag™ can’t be reproduced, and the tag itself can’t be tampered with without altering the look of the film. The label uses a non-removable, pH-neutral, non-acidic adhesive that won’t affect the archival properties of the print.

For each print, the artist or photographer obtains a set of gold, silver, and blue Bubble Tags™. The silver Bubble Tag™ goes on the back of the print and the gold Bubble Tag™ is attached to the customer’s certificate of authenticity. The creator of the art keeps the blue Bubble Tag™ on file and registers the tag set’s number to his or her personal space on ARTtrust Online.

Sellers or buyers can verify the authenticity of a tagged print on the ARTtrust Online website or with the free I-ARTtrust application for the Apple iPhone. The online records for each tag number will show an image of the print and an enlarged view of the print’s unique Bubble Tag™ configuration. The records also provide information about the artist, printing method, and materials used.

Close up of the unique bubble structure of one tri-dimensional ARTtrust Bubble Tag™

“Artists and photographers can purchase the Bubble Tags™ and ARTtrust membership cards directly through ARTtrust Online and soon from printmakers, print-service providers, or galleries. There is a nominal membership fee ($90) to set up a personal space for each photographer or artist who wants to use the ARTtrust system.”

Promoted in China, Europe and North America

“We recently launched ARTtrust Online in China and will continue promoting it worldwide with the goal of establishing ARTtrust as a global standard,” said Philippe Serenon, CEO of The ARTtrust Company in Paris, France.

The use of ARTtrust Online is being encouraged by a growing number of printmakers and galleries, as well as well-known global suppliers of art and photo papers including: ILFORD Imaging, Canson INFINITY, Hahnemϋhle FineArt, and Innova Art.

Some of the famous photographers in North America and Europe who are using ARTtrust Online include Joel Meyerowitz, Albert Watson, Douglas Kirkland, Daniel Cox, and Magnum photographers Elliott Erwitt, Thomas Hoepker and Martin Parr. Photographers in China who are using ARTtrust include Rong Rong and Mao Tong Qiang. PAE Art has adopted ARTtrust for their collection of Chinese photography.

For more information about protecting the authenticity of your prints with ARTtrust, contact Tom Hubbard at t.hubbard@arttrustonline.com.  To become a registered user of the ARTtrust system, see the website.

Same Content - New Pull Down Menus for Cleaner PMPN Front Page

As PMPN added new sections to better cover the photographic activities in the Pacific Northwest, our main menu that appears at the top of every page grew to become the dominant visual feature.  To us, this was a distraction from the photography content that visitors and members expected of PMPN.  So, we've added pull-down menus (shown above) to minimize the menu's real estate and provide our readers with quick access to any of our sections.  Readers can click on the main menu item or any of the sub-topics to easily navigate to the sections they are looking for.

The new menu structure will also allow PMPN to add new sections without cluttering or changing the size of our menu.  In addition, PMPN has always provided links within its stories to direct readers to other relevant internet sources.  Beginning this week, internet links that appear in any new story will open in a new window in your browser.  In that way, you will be able to follow the link and easily return to PMPN.  As always, we are anxious to hear from you.  If you have any comments or suggestions regarding our new menu structure, feel free to drop us an email with your thoughts.

Famed Documentary Photographer, Mary Ellen Mark, Comes To Portland

© Mary Ellen Mark

This workshop is a special opportunity to work with renowned documentary photographer Mary Ellen Mark. The weekend will include in-depth reviews of student work and open discussions about photography and the creative process. Throughout, Mary Ellen will candidly discuss the importance of creating emotionally powerful work that truly expresses the photographer's intent and vision.

Mary Ellen will also discuss her own work and process, as she guides students to develop a clear personal perspective in their own work. On Sunday afternoon, class will break for a shooting session at a local street festival, where students will have a chance to put lessons into practice individually. Following the workshop, students will send contact sheets from the festival shoot to Mary Ellen in New York for feedback and review.

Students should bring cameras and 20 - 30 prints for review. Register for this workshop by July 14th.

Mary Ellen Mark has achieved worldwide visibility through her numerous books, exhibitions and editorial work. She has published photo-essays and portraits in such publications as LIFE, New York Times Magazine, Rolling Stone, The New Yorker, and Vanity Fair. For over four decades, she has traveled extensively to make pictures that reflect a high degree of humanism. Today, she is recognized as one of our most respected and influential photographers. Her images of our world's diverse cultures have become landmarks in the field of documentary photography. Her portrayals of Mother Teresa, Indian circuses, and brothels in Bombay were the product of many years of work in India. A photo essay on runaway children in Seattle became the basis of the Academy Award nominated film Streetwise, directed by her husband, Martin Bell.

Her recent book and exhibition, Extraordinary Child, were commissioned by The National Museum of Iceland. The work features photographs of children at schools for the disabled in Reykjavik. Mark was presented with the Cornell Capa Award by the International Center of Photography in 2001. No Phooling: Photographers Phind Phun on Phoozl

You're in for a treat.  And, it's all courtesy of PMPN Member, Harald Johnson.  There's a new internet game in town called Phoozl.  What makes Phoozl special is its audience -- us!  Phoozl is a game site designed specifically for photographers of all skill levels and ages.

Ever wonder what your Photo IQ might be?  Well, there's a game on Phoozl that will answer that question.

How about testing your knowledge of photographic locations around the world?  Phoozl has a game that will test your photographic memory (Where Are We?).

Other games on Phoozl test your face recognition abilities (Face Match), send you out into the wild on specific photo assignments (Get the Shot!) and evaluate your eyes' discriminating capabilities (Differenz).

The entire site is the brain child of PMPN member Harald Johnson (with a little help from some close friends).  Harald is not only a member, but he is also a judge in PMPN's Monthly Members' Photo Contest, a frequent PMPN Guest Commentator and author of Digital Photography Printing books (Mastering Digital Printing series) that have become industry icons.  (PMPN will be interviewing Harald about his obsession with the letters "ph", the inspiration for Phoozl and his site building experience in an upcoming article.  So, more to follow.)

Phoozl's Home Page

Phoozl is the culmination of almost 2 years of tireless concept, design, and website and game development for Harald and his contributors and partners.  And, it's just been released to the world as a "public beta."  Harald is giving PMPN readers a "sneak peak, first look" at Phoozl and seeking your input.  Everything on Phoozl is fair game.  Try every game, every link, the sign up process -- everything. (but see Firefox note below)

Jot down your thoughts as you navigate through the site and play the Phoozl games and challenges.  Then, submit your feedback directly to Harald by clicking on this link: http://www.phoozl.com/index.php?loadpage=contact.php

For an even fuller experience, Sign Up on Phoozl and leave blog comments and game reviews and ratings. Become an official "Phoozleer" and Beta Tester to assist Harald in making this photographic game site a worldwide hit!

Here's some information to get you started and the type of feedback that would be most helpful to Harald.

  • For now, the site works best with Firefox browser.  Other browsers will be optimized soon so you may experience occasional hiccups -- but that's OK.  Harald wants to hear about your experiences (good and bad) regardless of your browser.  He's working hard to ensure that the Phoozl experience is the same on all platforms and browsers.
  • Tell Harald the browser you are using
  • Tell Harald the computer and operating system you are using (and Flash Player version, if you know it – Flash is required, sorry iPad users; Apple chose to skip the world's more popular gaming format!)
  • Tell Harald if any of the games are too easy or too hard

It's back!  The next generation of Polaroid film is now available.  For all of those Polaroid aficionados who's photographic lives were cut short with the closing of the last of Edward Land's Polaroid factories, arise and rejoice.  From a recycled Polaroid Plant in the Netherlands, three entrepreneurs and a world-class technical team comes a new line of instant films for SX-70 and Polaroid 600 cameras.

You might think that the re-invention of the classic Polaroid film is impossible.

You wouldn't be alone.  Even the founders of the business had their moments of doubt and hence the company's name: The Impossible Project.

Creative Mind Behind Iconic Nike Campaigns Exhibits His Photography At The Jordan Schnitzer Museum of Art

Marie Antoinette’s Head. Jim Riswold. Color digital print on Museo Silver Rag. 46 x 30 in. Courtesy of Brian Garcia and Kirsten Heinz.

The Jordan Schnitzer Museum of Art will open a new exhibition featuring the photography of Jim Riswold, the former creative director at the Portland, Ore. based advertising agency, Wieden+Kennedy.

The exhibition, “Marie Antoinette’s Head and Others,” features portraits that explore historical, political and art world notables. Riswold’s particular cast of characters is linked by their personal mythologies.

“Marie Antoinette’s Head and Others”
demonstrates the difference between Riswold’s portraits and traditional portraiture. Many of the subjects featured in the photographs are deceased, and the pictures satirize the subjects. While Riswold acknowledges the role of myth creation through portraiture, he serves it to the viewer with a large portion of cleverness and humor. Many of his works make fun of notorious historical figures, such as Benito Mussolini and Adolf Hitler, by constructing monumental settings in which the figurines are photographed. The exhibition includes the work “Marie Antoinette’s Head” from a series created on Marie Antoinette and her fatal finale.

Riswold’s photographs have been shown in galleries throughout the Northwest and are in the permanent collections of several museums in the region, including Seattle Art Museum and Portland Art Museum.

Riswold, born in 1957 in Seattle, Wash., was the creative director for Wieden+Kennedy for 22 years and an instructor for the agency’s experimental advertising school, WK12. After being diagnosed with leukemia in 2000, he quit advertising in 2006 to become a full-time artist and photographer, going from, as he describes it, “a career of selling people things they don’t need to making things that people don’t want.”

In his 14 years at Wieden+Kennedy, Riswold created some of Nike’s most famous ad campaigns, including “Spike and Mike” (1991), “Bo Knows” (1989), and Charles Barkley’s “I Am Not a Role Model” (1993)

Are You Addicted To Photography?

A Public Service Announcement by the Portland Metro Photographic News

You know you're addicted to photography when:

  1. You try to color calibrate you HDTV.
  2. You confuse door stops and f/stops.
  3. You forget your car keys and your wife, but not your camera.
  4. Your 16 gig memory card always says "memory full".
  5. You view the world in DX or FX format.
  6. You buy new eye glasses, and ask for a pair with interchangeable lenses.
  7. Your five year old daughter asks Santa for a camera, and you buy her a Canon 5D Mark II.
  8. You surprise your non-photographic spouse with a week at the Santa Fe Photographic Workshops as a 25th wedding anniversary gift.
  9. You ask your doctor for a histogram.
  10. You believe the second and sixth Presidents of the United States were Ansel Adams.
  11. You're in a gourmet restaurant and send your steak back for more saturation.
  12. You put copyright notices on your daughter's birthday party pictures.
  13. Your Facebook photo album documents the life and times of the common housefly.
  14. Your tripod is included in your will.
  15. Your local camera shop refers to you as "a major corporate investor".

If you have additional "signs of photographic addiction" to add to PMPN's list, send them to us in an email.

Here's two more symptoms provided by a loyal PMPN reader, Amanda:

  • You are enjoying a beautiful hike, and you think to yourself, "I need to add +3 magenta."
  • You drive past a dumpster covered with graffiti and log it into your mind for a future photo shoot.

Those Pesky Photographic Proportions
