Historic Thompson's Mill, Shedd, OR
Almost from photography's introduction, artists have made panoramic images. The advent of digital cameras and PhotoShop has revived what once was the domain of the professional, and now almost anyone can produce a basic panorama. This workshop is designed to introduce the individual to the history, camera setup, shooting requirements, software needs, and post-processing techniques of today's panoramic photography. This is very much a hands on workshop with time for shooting and one-on-one contact. Please contact instructor for "what to bring list".
Kurt Norlin is a graduate of Central Washington University (BA, MA) and the University of Oregon (MFA). He has been working with Panorama photography since 1993 and taught at Linn-Benton Community College from 1994 to 2009.

Come learn from one of the world’s best photographers, Joe McNally, in a two day intensive workshop in amazing Portland, Oregon. This workshop will focus on learning to light well including how to light while on location. The workshop will focus on hands-on instruction from Joe while working with your own camera and provided models.
Some lighting gear will be available to borrow, however, you should plan to bring your own lights.
Hands-on instruction and practice will be done by combining classroom instruction and two amazing on-location shoots. Models will be provided through the workshop and photographers will be broken into 5 groups of 3 with a model dedicated to each group. Lunch will also be provided each day so that the class can stay focused and get to know each other and feel more relaxed.
Class size is limited to just 15 photographers! This is to create an environment that facilitates intensive hands-on learning and practice. Spaces will be sold on a first come first serve basis and are expected to sell out quickly. Don’t miss a chance of a lifetime to get to work personally with Joe in two real life on-location shoots.
For those traveling in from out of town places such as Seattle, San Francisco, etc, discounted hotel rooms will be available soon for workshop attendees. It is likely that after class each day students (and hopefully Joe) will got to a bar to socialize and swap stories.
Day One: Starts with a very brief introduction slide show, and the basics of light. Using light well is the mandate for the program, so instruction will not be camera specific. Joe uses Nikon gear, but emphasizes the importance of managing light, not managing buttons and dials. Instruction will then start with using one light well and starts with straight flash, and strategies for producing a good light from a single hot shoe flash. We will then quickly progress into getting the light off the camera, and again, working simply, producing better and better light. Discussion and practice will center on the levers of control available such as -f-stops and shutter speed, volume and closeness of light source, reflectors, hard light, soft light. Demonstration and practice will be done with multiple models as we explore the nature of different light for different people. Examples of how one light works for a type of face, but not another will also be demonstrated. We also take a look at extremely mobile solutions for on-location photography. The day will end with discussion and practice on working a crowd, using depth of field to your advantage, and crafting light with things you can carry easily.
Day Two: Will start with a small “wake-up program” and extremely short review from previous day. The day’s focus will be on advanced techniques and start by dipping our toe into the murky waters known as multiple off camera wireless flash. Multiple flash, used well with direction, color and quality of light as key concepts. Multiple flashes are not a ticket to over lighting, but a way of ramping up the sophistication of one’s lighting grid, with beneficial results. Work will then progress into examples of big light from small flashes–i.e, using a number of speed lights through one big source moving on to even more advanced work such as high speed sync, gels and the power of color, and the look and feel of light. Discussion on when to use different types of like will be covered such as using hard, edgy light to produce a tough looking, moody portrait, and and softer, more forgiving light strikes a different mood, and speaks a different language. Again, work will be done in group and explored with multiple models.
About Joe
Joe McNally is an internationally acclaimed photographer whose career has spanned 30 years and included assignments in over 50 countries. He has shot cover stories for TIME, Newsweek, Fortune, New York, Entertainment Weekly, The New York Times Sunday Magazine, and Men’s Journal. He has been at various times in his career a contract photographer for Sports Illustrated, a staff photographer at LIFE, and, currently, an ongoing 23 year contributor to the National Geographic, shooting numerous cover stories for those publications. Joe was listed by American Photo as one of the 100 Most Important People in Photography and described by the magazine as “perhaps the most versatile photojournalist working today”. He has been honored as a member of Kodak-PDN Legends Online, as well as being a Nikon Legend Behind the Lens. In 2010, he was voted as one of the 30 most influential photographers of the decade in an industry wide Photo District News survey.
McNally won the first Alfred Eisenstaedt Award for Journalist Impact for a LIFE coverage titled “The Panorama of War.” He has also been honored numerous times by Communication Arts, PDN, Graphis, American Photo, POY, and The World Press Photo Foundation. In the aftermath of 911, McNally, using the world’s only life size Polaroid camera, created a project called “Faces of Ground Zero,” which traveled through 2002, became a book, and helped generate approximately $2 million dollars for the relief effort. It is considered by many museum and art professionals to be one of the most important artistic endeavors to evolve from the 911 tragedy. His fine art work is represented by the Monroe Gallery of Santa Fe, and his prints are in numerous collections, most significantly the National Portrait Gallery of the United States.
He shot the first all digital coverage in the history of the National Geographic, called “The Future of Flying,” a 32-page cover story commemorating the the centennial observance of the Wright Brothers’ flight. The coverage was deemed noteworthy enough that it has been incorporated into the archives of the Library of Congress.
In the last two years, McNally has written two books, The Moment It Clicks, and The Hot Shoe Diaries, both of which cracked Amazon’s top ten list of best sellers. His advertising and commercial clients include FedEx, Sony, Nikon, Land’s End, General Electric, MetLife, Adidas, American Ballet Theater, and the Wildlife Conservation Society.

Most photographers using Lightroom already know how to import and organize photos, and to do basic editing. But too often many of the program’s powerful features remain undiscovered: features that make a difference when you’re out to build a well-designed workflow. Well, that’s about to change!
Most Lightroom classes focus on the basics. This advanced, hands-on workshop is designed to help you build on the knowledge you already have. You’ll learn to use many of Lightroom’s buried features. You’ll also learn all about the important new features in Lightroom 3. Along the way, you’ll get a bird’s-eye view of Lightroom that helps you understand the basic concepts behind the software and how it’s best used.
Some of the things you’ll learn:

Shore Acres and the Oregon Coast will be the focus of this workshop. On the Oregon coast west of Coos Bay, Shore Acres is often termed the "Point Lobos of Oregon." It is an area of convoluted rock forms and tide pools. North and south along the coast are pristine sand dunes and volcanic "seastacks" forming the rugged coastline.
This is the backdrop for an intensive photographic experience with Stu Levy and Don Kirby. Early mornings and late afternoons will feature field sessions with camera-side evaluation of composition and exposure. At mid-day, the instructors will lead print viewing and critique sessions, and will present their own work. Stu and Don are intimately familiar with the region and offer you a unique combination of technical expertise and creative insight which promises to make this workshop an unforgettable experience. Information on accommodations will be provided.

Pinhole photography is photography at its most basic. All that is required is a light tight chamber with a small hole at one end, photo - sensitive material at the other, and some simple shutter to control the exposure. Often hand made, these simple devices produce images that have unique visual qualities. The students in this workshop will learn to make simple pinhole cameras, calculate proper exposure, and produce paper negatives and prints. This is very much a hands on class. No prior darkroom experience needed, just a sense of play and a desire to see the world in a new way.

This weekend intensive is a chance to study with renowned portrait and landscape photographer Arno Rafael Minkkinen. The weekend will be an in-depth look at what it means to embark on a creative path, with a focus on accessing personal creativity through photography. What does it mean to decide to be an artist? How can you nurture creativity in your life and continue to grow as an artist? How can you create strong images that truly express your vision?
With Arno's inspiring guidance, you'll begin to answer these questions as they relate to your own work and process. The weekend will include round-table discussions, slide-lectures, and hands-on shooting, as well as in-depth reviews of student work. Arno will help you identify the next steps to take with your work, as you learn to articulate and hone in on your creative vision. Students will also complete two unique assignments designed to spark creativity and develop the senses.
Arno Rafael Minkkinen is a Finnish American photographer. He is an inspirational educator, lecturer, and essayist. Critic A.D. Coleman wrote of Minkkinen, "[His] photographs form an astonishing account of one man's primal engagement with the civilized and natural worlds, and with himself - both a physical odyssey and a psychological voyage of the solitary human spirit...[They are] elegant, witty, inventive, and often stunningly beautiful."
Minkkinen's work is in the collections of the Museum of Modern Art, the Museum of Fine Arts Houston, the Museum of Fine Arts Boston, the Musée d'Art Moderne de la Ville de Paris, the Centre Georges Pompidou, the Maison Européenne de la Photographie, the Musée de l'Élysée in Lausanne, and the Tokyo Metropolitan Museum of Photography among many others. This workshop is designed for all those photographers who love making images but never paused long enough to learn how f-stops, shutter speeds, ISOs, and the like can be used to make their pictures even better. In the morning we'll demystify how to control depth of field, how to get good pictures in low light, how to use shutter speeds to show motion, how resolution and ISOs affect image sharpness, and other basics of photographic exposure. Once the complex is made simple, we'll move on to examine traditional and novel approaches to composition and seeing, and take an afternoon walk-about to shoot picturesque Newport Harbor. Both film and digital photographers are welcome.
Recently retired from teaching college-level photography, Rich Bergeman is an accomplished photographer and platinum/palladium printer. He uses everything from large-format film cameras to homemade pinhole cameras to digital cameras, and has exhibited throughout the Northwest for over 25 years. During the past decade, revolutionary changes have taken place in book publishing. Now it is possible to download book design software and put together ones’ own very high quality book, then have it printed in any quantity. No longer is a large investment needed for a press run. This opens vast possibilities for anyone to design and publish their own work at very low cost.
During this one-day workshop we’ll learn how to download and install BookSmart, the book design software from Blurb. All aspects of using the software will be covered, from initial concept, through layout and page design, to uploading the finished book to obtain copies. We’ll also learn how to use PhotoShop Elements to design pages, then load them into BookSmart. By the end of the day, each student will have a thorough grounding in the basic skills needed to design and self-publish books on any topic.
John Wimberley was born in Bermuda during 1945, and currently lives in southern Oregon. He began photographing in 1966 while serving in the US Navy.
In reviewing his first one-man show in 1973, Artweek wrote: “The first thing that one is made aware of is that the photographer, John Wimberley, is a craftsman of the highest order. His prints are not merely technically correct, but wonderfully alive.” John became a sought-after expert in black and white film development.
In 1983 John had the first of two, two-man exhibitions with Ansel Adams. Now, with more than 44 years in photography, John’s critically acclaimed work has been honored with more than 70 major exhibitions, and is represented in more than 500 public and private collections. As The Herald of Monterey, California recently wrote: “Wimberley’s undisputed technical mastery is but the springboard for visual poetry of spiritual realms. What remains unnoticed by most, as seen through Wimberley’s eyes, becomes a powerful, mysterious invitation.”

This exciting workshop provides a unique opportunity to photograph the stunning Oregon coast with world-renowned photographer John Wimberley, The Portland Metro Photographic News recently called “Oregon’s Photo Laureate”. Anyone with a camera is welcome, regardless of experience level, age, format, or whether using film or digital.
Class sessions and supportive, productive portfolio reviews will be held at the Newport Arts Center. Field trips to special, nearby locations to photograph will provide an opportunity for John to provide both group and one-on-one instructions.
The emphasis will be on the inner awareness and exploration of each photographers’ personal relationship with potential subject matter. We will learn effective and proven methods to establish “right-relationship” with whatever we are drawn to photograph, allowing our intuition, emotions, feelings, and the essence of our individuality to fully enrich our photographs.
This is a rare chance to spend a fun, fascinating weekend photographing one of America’s most beautiful places with “One of America’s finest living landscape photographers.”
Bring your camera and be prepared for an enjoyable and enlightening experience.

You’re back from your photo shoot with hundreds of images. Now what? This class will help you edit your images down to a manageable number. You’ll learn to look at your photos with a critical eye for composition, the story they tell, and their final use. You’ll get tips on how to shoot more selectively resulting in fewer images to edit. There will be plenty of time for questions and discussion. Bring a camera to shoot on campus. We’ll have a hands-on editing exercise in the afternoon.
“Editing your images is the next most important step after making them. I want to help you get to the essence of what you saw in the viewfinder. The difference between an average photographer and a good photographer is that a good one doesn’t show the bad stuff. Take charge of your outtakes. Select the best and save disk space.”
Photographer Claudia Howell borrowed a camera for a college trip to Europe and has been hooked on photography ever since. She earned a degree in photojournalism and began her photography career at the former Oregon Journal in Portland. “I was just amazed. They actually paid me to do what I love to do. What a deal!”
Howell has photographed all aspects of news, sports and features including some of the region’s major stories, such as the Mt. St. Helens eruption, Eastern Oregon’s Rajneeshee cult invasion, and edited most of the Civil War games between Oregon and OSU.
In the late 80’s, she moved to The Oregonian, editing and shooting news, sports and feature photographs for 25 years.
“As a news picture editor, I learned to select the best work as quickly as possible. I also learned that most of us overshoot. There’s an old saying, ‘film is cheap.’ Well, digits are virtually free and that leads to even more overshooting.”

A Steve Anchell Workshop
There is more than one way to skin a cat, or so the saying goes. There is also more than one way to use a large format camera to create exceptional images. Even so, it is easy to settle into one method of exposing and developing without ever exploring the alternatives. In this weekend workshop we will focus on alternative methods of exposure and different ways to develop and print large format negatives.
Some of the techniques we will practice will be working with reciprocity failure for long exposures; stand development; tray development; tank development; contact printing; enlarging lenses for close-ups; calculating bellows extension and depth-of-field.
Leave your BTZS tubes, Palm Pilot, spot meter, JOBO rotary processor, and Zone System Manual at home. By the end of this workshop you will have expanded your knowledge and understanding of large format photography, simplified your working methods, and entered a new phase of creativity.
Any view camera format is welcome as long as it has swings and tilts, from 2 x 3” to 11 x 14”. All levels of view camera knowledge are welcome – beginners to experts. The less you know the more you’ll learn. The more you know the more you will be amazed.

MARKETING WORKSHOP
You will learn how to best market yourself and your work. We’ll start with an evaluation of your art and your marketing successes and challenges to date. We’ll cover tools and specific marketing materials you can use to boost your career and sales of individual artworks. Some of the topics covered will include: defining a target audience, creating the optimal marketing piece, writing query letters, entering juried shows, participating in portfolio review events, attending trade shows, designing and creating self-promotion materials such as web sites and general best practices for presenting your work. This workshop is targeted toward photographers who already have bodies of work they wish to present and who are actively marketing their work.
This will be an opportunity to get feedback on materials you may already be using or preparing to create. You’re encouraged to bring in your current marketing and work samples.
This intensive course is designed to help you either complete a new body of work or an existing series that you may have trouble finishing, with the goal being to have a completed portfolio of between 15-20 prints. We will spend the first half of each class discussing such topics as developing a concept, image quality, print quality, print size, printing materials, editing, sequencing, general craft, bookmaking, marketing, and writing your project statement; the second half will be devoted to evaluating your progress on the development of the work.
This is not a ‘technical skills’ workshop, although we’ll discuss technical skills as it pertains to making the work stronger. The emphasis is on creating the work itself, and shaping its form so that you will be able to present the portfolio to your chosen audience whether that be a gallery director, collector or the media. You’ll develop both the tangible product—a portfolio—and the ability to explain its importance. We’ll sharpen your ability to critique your own work, as well as others’, and work through the project from conceptualization to final printing.
Admission is by review. Please e-mail to lauren@laurenhenkin.com a low resolution pdf to me by clicking here that includes 20 images from recent work. I will contact you to let you know if I think this workshop would be useful to you.

Chateau Changyu AFIP Winery, one hour from Bejing, China
Former National Geographic freelance photographer, Janis Miglavs, will lead a twelve-day, one of a kind tour which blends ancient Chinese culture with the new world of Chinese wine, all while learning to take memorable photographs.
Sites visited include the well-known: The Great Wall, Terra-cotta Warriors, The Ancient city of Pingyao, Tian an Men Square and Forbidden City. But imagine seeing these alongside the seasoned eye of a professional photographer who shoots for magazines and clients around the world. Besides these Chinese cultural highlights, the tour also includes unique sites where few if any tourists visit. Miglavs describes one of these, the Yellow Valley Canyon, as a mini Grand Canyon with vineyards right up to the edge.

Another first: the tour will visit six Chinese wineries, including Chateau Changyu AFIP Global, a Disney-like French chateau and village; Grace Vineyards, a wine oasis in the middle of a rural agricultural area; Bolongbao Winery, a smaller more intimate experience; Treaty Port housed in a Scottish Castle on a hillside; Chateau Junding with its expansive vineyard estate and golf course; and Huadong-Parry winery, surrounded by a lush vineyards and mountain landscape. With the connections Miglavs has cultivated, tour participants will get a behind the scenes look that few experience, a chance to visit with winemakers and photograph workers during harvest. Naturally participants will sample some of the best and most unique wines China offers while experiencing the Chinese drinking culture.
Miglavs’ wine background is extensive. He has created two wine-related books, including Oregon The Taste of Wine, which has won many awards and recognition. These include a Gold Medal for the “Best Regional Book”“Best Book on New World Wines" in North America; one of four finalists in the Gourmand World Book Awards; and Wine Spectator magazine just named the book as one of “top new reads for wine lovers".
He is currently working on two new book titles, including China: The New Wine Frontier. His extensive research and travels for the China Winery book brought him to the most interesting wineries in China where he developed special connections with winery executives, winemakers and vineyard workers.
Miglavs also writes and photographs features for Wine Spectator, Wine Enthusiast as well as travel and photography magazines.
All levels of wine connoisseurs, travelers and photographers are welcome. Miglavs anticipates that the photography will range from the point-and shooters who want to learn how to use their mobile phone cameras more effectively all the way to the professionals who want an insider’s China perspective. The goal is to have fun and produce a professional level book from the photographs taken by all the participants.
The 12 days trip includes R/T airfare from Los Angeles, 5-star hotels, travel within China, meals, winery visits, and more.
Miglavs is working with China tour specialist, Marc Curtis of China Wine Tours, to create this journey like no other on the planet.

Note: Last year, PMPN covered the Analog Photographers' Users Group "Gathering" at Washington State University in Vancouver. Among the presentations was Vaughn Hutchins' (shown at left) demonstration of Carbon Printing. It was quickly obvious that he was not only an expert in this alternative process, but that Vaughn was passionate about helping others explore this fine art processing technique. With the announcement this workshop, students now have a hands-on opportunity to experience this century-old processing.
Coming Friday, May 7th through Sunday, May 9th
Vaughn has been exploring the carbon printing process since 1992 and his carbon prints, as well as his platinum prints, can be seen at the Ansel Adams Gallery in Yosemite Valley. He is well known and respected in the world of alternative photographic processes. Not a believer in “trade secrets”, he enjoys sharing what he has learned.
This practical, hands-on workshop will give its participants the information and skills needed to make prints using one of the world’s most beautiful and unique photographic processes. Patented in 1864 and considered the premier photo process of the time, the carbon printing process yield prints that are extremely stable – prints made 140 years ago look as good as the day they were made.

Carbon printing is capable of pulling everything out from the negative. Its range of values surpasses that of silver gelatin prints, and even that of platinum prints. But what sets Carbon Printing above other processes is its capability to produce prints that have a raised relief -- shadow tones that rise up from the paper surface. This creates an amazing sense of depth and sharpness within the prints.
The workshop participants will have the opportunity to carry out all the steps in the process, and make prints to take home. The process is quite inexpensive as there is no silver or other expensive metals, nor are there any rare and expensive chemicals involved. Developing is even done in hot water! Much of the material needed can be bought at grocery and local art stores. The images are eventually transferred onto fixed-out photo paper. Yes, you can finally use that old fogged photo paper you have resisted throwing out for years!
Carbon printing is a contact-printing process only, using UV light sources. Participants may use camera negatives or enlarged inkjet negatives. Before the workshop, Vaughn will provide participants with information regarding the quality of negatives that work well with this process. Those who cannot have negatives ready for the workshop, but still wish to learn the process, can be provided with negatives that they can print.
The workshop takes place in the Newport Visual Art Center. The large windows of the classroom overlook the ocean and the long stretch of beach -- with excellent food just a few minutes walking distance. The darkroom will easily handle the maximum of 6 participants Vaughn will allow in the workshop.
The workshop will begin on Friday, May 7th at 4 p.m. After a short introduction, the participants will make their test prints – this will get everyone ready for the next two days of learning and printing. The workshop will end at 1 p.m. on Sunday.
The cost of the workshop is $250. Please contact Vaughn at vgh7001@humboldt.edu

Many photographers have found that Adobe Lightroom 2 is all the image editing program they need. Before you open your copy of CS4 (or CS5!) you might want to attend one or both of these workshops and find out just what LR can do for you. By the end of the day you'll know what the program can do and whether you need anything else.
The Lightroom program is divided into two main parts: image management (Library) and image editing (Develop). These two, one day, workshops will bring you up to speed on how to import, manage, and edit your images using Adobe Lightroom.

We're giving you plenty of lead time to plan for this very special event for outdoor and adventure photographers. Seldom will you find a more star-studded group of landscape and outdoor photographers brought together for a week of education and sharing. Art and photography have been long synonymous with Telluride, Colorado. The town also has a long-standing reputation as the festival capital of Colorado with a rich and varied summer event calendar. The Telluride Photo Festival, in association with the Ah Haa School for the Arts, seeks to combine these two elements into a week long event that celebrates photography, art, nature, learning, and commerce in the beauty that is Telluride.
Telluride, CO (PRWEB) January 4, 2010 -- The world's most renowned outdoor and adventure photographers will share their art and their passion at Telluride's inaugural Photography Festival September 20 - 26, 2010. The weeklong event, geared toward professional and experienced amateur photographers, is timed just right for photographers to capture the changing fall light and the aspens turning gold and blaze orange.

The Photography Festival is teaming up with the Ah Haa School for the Arts. The Ah Haa School is a community center of learning and culture and a Telluride icon for nearly two decades. Ah Haa will help promote the Festival and host a number of Festival events as well as the opening reception and gallery shows at the School's historic Depot building.

It probably started with the very first caveman artists. Struck with the ability to visualize everyday life through drawings on cave walls, other aspiring cave drawers would seek the help of the group’s elder artist for training and inspiration. The concept of the “mentor” began.
Today, you would be hard pressed to find a respected photographer who didn’t have a mentor to learn from and lean on during the formative years of his/her career. Whether the freshman photographer was called an apprentice, a trainee, an assistant or a mentor student, the concepts were the same. Each novice photographer was seeking to become an expert in their photographic craft by learning the mechanics and aesthetics of photography through a personal and hands-on, working relationship with a highly-regarded member of the photographic community.
Finding a mentor who has the time, the patience and the willingness to take a neophyte photographer under his or her wing is no small task. The Santa Fe Photographic Workshops has taken a large step towards making it easier for hopeful photographers to find world-class mentors by becoming a mentor student. Now entering its second year, the Santa Fe Photographic Workshops Mentorship Program is a booming success and the recipient of student praise.
PMPN spoke with Reid Callanan, the Director of the Santa Fe Workshop, to learn more about the program, their stable of well-known mentors and the feedback they are receiving from students in their mentorship program.
“The idea of a mentoring program had been brewing in my head for about a year before it was formally introduced. I had noticed that students would leave their Santa Fe Workshop session inspired and excited about photography. But, some would return home, become consumed by their normal family and work lives, and loose the momentum and enthusiasm they had built during their Workshop experience.
It was a phone call from one of our Workshop instructors, David Middleton, that really got me going. It’s common for students and instructors at the Santa Fe Workshop to strike up long-term relationships. Nearly every instructor invites their students to give them a call if they have questions or problems. David told me that he would routinely receive calls from former students. He suggested that a program for on-going support of Santa Fe Workshop students should be formalized. That was all I needed to take my fledgling idea and create our mentorship program.”
Reid’s first hurdle was to develop a core group of noted photographers who would be willing to act a mentors. “I wanted photographers who had been Santa Fe Workshop instructors and whose personal style and commitment to the student reflected the commitment and reputation of the Workshop,” said Reid. Without exception, the top 12 names on his list eagerly accepted Reid’s invitation.
Structuring the program was Reid’s next challenge. “Fortunately one of my first mentor choices was George DeWolf. George has considerable experience with mentoring, and offers his professional mentoring services through his website. George became my greatest resource for establishing the Santa Fe Workshop program”, says Reid.
The now formalized program offers aspiring photographers three mentoring options:
The typical year-long and 6-month programs include phone meetings with the selected mentor approximately every three weeks. During the 60-minute meetings the student and mentor discuss topics that are relevant to meeting the goals of the student. The mentor will critique and offer suggestions to images that have been submitted from the previous session’s assignment. And, a new assignment is provided to the student. It’s this personal attention and professional critique that most motivates the mentor student. The mentoring sessions are not ego stroking events. Each student’s feet are held to the fire. Assignment due dates are firm and fixed. And their images are critically and honestly evaluated.
Since mentorships are custom-tailored to the specific needs and goals of the student, the actual content of each program is varies. Defining a student’s needs/goals and matching them up with the most appropriate mentor is Reid’s primary job.
(Photo above © Jennifer Spelman)
“I personally interview each student mentor candidate. During this interview, I work with the student to identify his/her objectives and goals. I then provide contact information for two or three mentors that I believe are good matches for the student. The student contacts each mentor to determine which he feels most comfortable with in a teacher-student role. This has worked very well, and has always ended with a match that best nurtures the student’s educational and photographic aspirations.”
After announcing the program in 2009, Reid’s phone was flooded with students from around the world looking for the opportunity to work with a mentor. Most of these potential mentor students had taken Santa Fe Workshop classes, and were eager to continue their photographic education under the tutelage of a seasoned professional. “The majority of the mentor students fall in the (exhibiting and non-exhibiting) ‘advanced amateur’ category, and want to continue improving their photography skills,” says Reid. “They recognize the huge boast their photography can gain from a close learning relationship with a respected photographer. They see the structure, discipline and commitment required by this program as a method of fostering and forcing their own personal growth.”
The Santa Fe Photographic Workshop’s Photography Mentorship Program has limited itself to 36 students the first year. And the results have been extraordinary.
Jimmy Lam, an aspiring photographer in Singapore was one of the first to sign up. “I instantaneously made the decision to apply for this program,” Lam said. “It was a no brainer. I live in Asia. In Chinese custom, if a great master offers you the opportunity to be his disciple, you do not ask whether you should accept the offer. You just ask when and where.”
The reaction of the mentors is further endorsement of the commitment of Santa Fe’s mentor family. Renowned commercial photographer and color master, Arthur Meyerson stated, “Early in my career, I was fortunate enough to come under the spell of Ernst Haas who later became my mentor. One of the many things I learned from him was that teaching was a great way to give back to a profession that's been good to you. Seeing someone progress, be inspired and get excited about their work makes it all worthwhile.” Meyerson calls the learning experience at the Santa Fe Photographic Workshops “the benchmark by which other photo workshops are measured, primarily due to Reid’s leadership and his great staff.”
The success of the Photography Mentoring program hasn’t gone to Reid’s head. “Our plan is to conservatively grow the Mentoring Program. We are learning as we go along. Those lessons are being incorporated into the structure of our Program to ensure that each student’s experience contributes to his/her growth in photography.” For 2010, this cautious grow translates into the addition of 5 new mentors and increasing the program enrollment to approximately 40 to 45 students.
There is no beginning to the Mentoring Program’s year. New mentor students are added throughout the year. The Program is always in session, and always being improved. With the primary mentor-student contact being conducted by telephone, photographers from around the world can take advantage of the Program – and find the one-on-one personal attention they seek.
Reid will take equally conservative marketing steps in 2010, but he hopes to gradually attract the attention of younger emerging photographers and a larger international enrollment.
Thanks to Reid, and his Photography Mentorship Program, students of all ages and photographic interests can reap the benefits of acquiring the skills and self-confidence that are only possible with the one-on-one guidance of an engaged and concerned photographic mentor -- no matter where they are located in the world.
Currently the cost of the Santa Fe Photographic Workshop Mentorship Program ranges from $375 to $4,500 – depending on the program selected. The cost of the Mentor Programs will increase in 2010. If the Mentor Program is something that you want to pursue, you should consider making arrangements before January 2010, and save some money. Prospective students interested in the Photography Mentoring Program are asked to call Reid at 505-983-1400, extension 15.
The Santa Fe Photographic Workshop has long been a Mecca for photographers and a breeding ground for new talent. Considering the Workshop’s well-deserved reputation and innovative curriculum, a Photography Mentoring program is a natural step for an institution that has made the needs of students its defining and most alluring trait.

The second part of the evening we will ride with local photographer Tom Hassler as he walks us through his amazing journey to Antarctica with stunning images printed in large format.
"In January 2009, after 15 months of planning and preparation, I was fortunate to have the opportunity to travel to Antarctica to photograph for two weeks. While I naturally expected to find scenic beauty and grandeur, what surprised me was a strong sense of quiet spirituality in the place. At the same time, the extreme and often harsh natural elements are never far removed. It's a place where literally one false step can cost you your life.
I was very fortunate to have one of the first Nikon D3X cameras in the U.S. to take on this trip. This amazing machine did a flawless job capturing once-in-a-lifetime images. Traveling as light as possible was critical, and a careful selection of Nikkor lenses never failed to get the image I was looking for regardless of the extreme conditions."

The first DSLR Photography 101 and 102 classes being offered by Tom Hubbard through the "Learning Digital Photography" program are now history. Students attending the classes unanimously gave the two sessions their highest possible rating - 6 Stars. The students' comments are unsolicited testimonials to the quality and content of the classes. Having EVERY student give these classes the highest rating possible is rare and a tribute to Tom's commitment to education and his ability to connect with his students to make the complexity of photography user-friendly.
Tom's next DSLR Photography 101 and 102 classes will be held in November. Beginning DSLR photographers can find registration information HERE. Mark Fitzgerald will be conducting Digtial Darkroom 101 and 102 classes in October. Mark brings the same passion for education to his classes that take beginning students by the hand to explain digital imaging using Photoshop and Photoshop Elements. More information on Mark's classes for beginning their computer imaging experience can be found HERE.
The DSLR Photography series will soon be expanded to include two additional classes -- DSLR Photography 201 and 202. These classes will provide in-depth and instructor-led hands-on experience with the picture taking topics that most frustrate beginning DSLR photographers. Information about these "second level" photography classes will be posted on the "Learning Digital Photography" site when they become available.

During the workshop Steve will share techniques for photographing street subjects. From standing in a doorway with a long lens to engaging the subject in conversation and obtaining permission to photograph. You will be shown how to approach your subject and practice your technique in the streets of the Big Apple during the day. The workshop will culminate with the annual parade through the Village on Halloween night. Special press passes will be provided to allow participants access to the parade.
During the workshop you will also learn how to get the best exposure for night photography, how to handhold your camera at night without flash, and how to use flash to capture movement.
This workshop is meant to be a fun learning experience for all levels beginning or advanced, amateur or professional.
Photographers may use film or digital cameras.

The Lightroom program is divided into two main parts: image management (Library) and image editing (Develop). These two, one day, workshops presented by Steve Anchell will bring you up to speed on how to import, manage, and edit your images using Adobe Lightroom.
From import to export we'll spend six hours on both Saturday going through LR. By the end of the day you'll know what the program can do and whether you need anything else.
Topics Covered:
There are two Mac and three Window computers available for student use. If you wish to reserve a Mac or Windows computer please let Steve know in an e-mail when you register, otherwise it is first come. Alternately you may bring your own in order to get used to working on it. These one day workshops are limited to 5 participants. The cost for either is $100. However, if you sign up for both at the same time the cost is only $185.
“The Lightroom workshop . . . was very helpful. The instruction and work planned for the day flowed well and I am enjoying Lightroom at home now. Thanks for the handout.”
–Doris E. Potter, Eugene, Oregon
“Your careful organization of the logical procedures for learning and using Lightroom was presented in a style that was both informative and conversational. Books are often confusing because you cannot ask the author to explain the concept in another way. The added bonus of the written narrative you provided extended the value of the workshop because I did not have to take notes!”
–Richard Gilkey, Portland, Oregon
“I am even more excited about Lightroom after the two days of training. I knew just enough to know that I didn't know enough. I now believe I have the foundation and knowledge to establish a truly workable work flow and image organization.”
–Gail Miller, Sonoma, California
“Thanks for an excellent workshop, I really appreciate the small class size and a relaxed learning environment. Lightroom is no longer confusing.”
–Ron Coelho, Vancouver, Washington

In today's ubiquitous media age of digital imagery and simulated reality, in which everyone is a photographer, and everything has been photographed, photography's accepted role as a fine art, a depicter of truth and a recorder of facts is under siege. Many contemporary photographic artists ask themselves: Why do I take pictures? What do I have to say that hasn't been said before? Do my photographs depict anything akin to truth or reality?! In this fun and provocative course participants will explore these and other issues concerning photography's shifting role in contemporary culture through photo assignments, field trips, guest presentations, readings, discussions and a long-term, self-chosen project. Students may work with film or digital media.

Photographers are invited to take a more playful look at how they "see" at a weekend workshop that bypasses all the technicalities of high-end cameras and turns making pictures purely into a matter of seeing and responding with a quiet click of the shutter. According to instructor Kurt Norlin, the plastic shutters, limited controls and unpredictable nature of today's so-called toy cameras "produce images that have unique visual qualities," often conveying a nostalgic, dreamy look at the world around us. Students will be shown how to set up and load toy cameras for best results, and an overview of various approaches to and masters of this relatively new branch of photography. A number of medium-format cameras will be provided to participants, or they can bring their own. Film, processing and paper will be provided. The class is part of the Newport Photography Workshops.
Tuition is $100, plus a $40 lab and materials fee.
To register or for more information, contact Norlin at norlink1@hotmail.com or phone 541-967-6892
Kurt Norlin (BA, MA, MFA) has been working with toy cameras since 1993 and taught photography at Linn-Benton Community College in Albany for 15 years before retiring in 2009. To see some of his toy camera work go to kurtnorlinphotography.com/ and check out the Alt Viz gallery.
A Practical Introduction to Carbon Printing
A Hands-on Workshop
Instructor:
Vaughn Hutchins
November 13, 14 and 15, 2009
Carbon Printing was one of the first permanent photographic processes, and remains one of the most beautiful! Patented in 1864 by Sir Joseph Swan, the carbon printing process was the preferred fine art photographic process until the early 20th Century. A unique feature of carbon prints is the raised relief that can be achieved. The blacks of the image rise above the surface of the print. This texture gives the image a sense of depth and sharpness not found in other photographic processes. Carbon prints are capable of recording a very wide range of tonal values. They go far beyond what is possible with traditional silver gelatin printing, and even that of platinum printing. Carbon prints are made from gelatin, sugar and a carbon-based pigment, such as lampblack watercolor paint.
Most of the material needed can be purchased locally at supermarkets, art supply shops and hardware stores. Carbon printing is a relatively inexpensive process and is extremely stable and permanent.
The Workshop
This workshop will take place at the Newport Visual Arts Center in Newport, Oregon. This excellent facility is located at the historic Nye Beach. The workshop will begin at 4pm on Friday, November 13th with a demonstration of the entire carbon printing process. This will prepare the participants for a productive Saturday and Sunday (8am to 4pm both days).
Participants will make carbon prints using their own negatives, but will be using carbon tissue pre-made by the instructor. In-camera and enlarged digital negatives both work well. Carbon printing is a contact printing process. The size of one’s print is the same size as the negative. Negatives can be provided for participants without access to large format negatives or digitally enlarged negatives. Due to the wide range of values this process can record, negatives that have too much contrast for traditional silver printing can make beautiful carbon prints. Negatives that make good platinum prints also make fine carbon prints. Vaughn welcomes questions about your negatives and can provide help prior to the workshop.
The Instructor

Vaughn Hutchins has photographed for over 30 years. After working as a wilderness ranger/mule packer from 1980 to 1990, he has operated the teaching darkroom for the Art Dept. of Humboldt State University. He has taught carbon printing workshops at the Ansel Adams Gallery in Yosemite Valley, and at PhotoCentral in Hayward, CA. For many years, he was a workshop assistant for the Friends of Photography in Carmel, CA. Vaughn began making carbon prints in 1992 and is considered one of the driving forces in the renewed interest in this historic photographic process. Vaughn works primarily with the light on the landscape. He is also working on a series of images of his triplet boys in the environment. Some of his images can be viewed on the Ansel Adams Gallery website (anseladams.com) under “Contemporary Art”.
Registration
Registration for this workshop will begin Aug. 15th, 2009. The cost of the workshop is $200, plus a $50 Material/facility fee. A $100 deposit at the time of registration is required to hold a space for you. The balance ($150) is required by October 31st.
Refunds
Full refunds, minus a $25 processing fee, will be given until October 31st. After October 31st refunds will only be made if the workshop can be filled. For more information, contact Vaughn after August 15th at: vgh7001@humboldt.edu

Sight & Insight: Opening to Creativity
A Workshop on Seeing in Photography
Presented by John Wimberley
October 16-18, 2009, $225.00
In Beautiful Newport, on the Oregon Coast
The foundation of photography is seeing. While equipment and techniques have their place, it is the quality and depth of one's seeing that determines whether each picture reaches its full potential. Light reflected from surfaces is recorded by the camera, but it is the job of the photographers’ eyes to see through those surfaces to the significance and meaning within.
This exciting workshop presents an alternative model for finding potential pictures. We will explore using soft eyes, the important role of peripheral vision, and learn how to watch for and respond to “flirts”; signals from objects in our environment that draw our attention. Some of the additional factors we’ll examine include cultural conditioning, the vocabulary we use to describe photography and visual symbolism . Because all parts of the body and psyche are interconnected, we’ll learn the important roles played by energy level, posture, and breathing. Simple and effective exercises to rest and refresh the eyes will also be presented.
The goal will be to have our pictures reflect who we are as individuals at the deepest level, rather than be derivative of previously seen work.
This workshop is open to anyone with a camera, regardless of format, or whether film or digital.
John Wimberley has been hailed as “one of America’s preeminent landscape photographers.” His critically acclaimed work has been honored with more than 60 major exhibitions and has been published around the world. John’s work is represented in hundreds of public and private collections. He is also a retired Yoga teacher and brings a body-centered perspective to teaching photography.

If you're itching to shake off the photographic "blahs" and shed that dry old skin of cliché "Kodak moments", this class is for you. On Saturday, you'll spend the day playing and experimenting with different shooting techniques, including deliberate blurs and textures, designed to mix things up and gently push you out of your comfort zone. The changing light as late afternoon shifts into evening will provide plenty of opportunity for great shots. The next day, class will review work in a hands-on digital lab session.

One respected online press release organization, PRWeb, is offering free webinars that take 30 minutes of your time to grasp the fundamentals of the craft. Whether or not you decide to use PRWeb's services, it is well worth the time to hear the do's and don'ts of persuasive press release creation from professionals. The company also provides free Webinars on optimizing your press release for maximum search engine results.
In July, PRWeb offers 4 webinars that photographers and others might want to attend:

Neil van Niekerk is a well known expert in on-camera flash and authors the extremely popular web site Planet Neil which discusses all things "flash". Pros will gain a new understanding of the techniques and possibilities of flash photography.
My intention with these workshops is to help other photographers grasp whichever aspects had been elusive up until then - whether it is a technique, or bit of theory - and then have things suddenly fall into place. My approach is to teach other photographers how to achieve what they want to. And what I am trying for, are for a few “aaaah, NOW I get it!” moments.
The September 1, 2009 workshop is divided into two sections.
Attendees can register for the 4-hour morning session only (9 am to 1:30pm) for $200, or they can register for for the full day session which includes hands-on instruction, and shooting sessions with models (9 am to 8pm) for $500.
Each Seminar + Workshop will be limited to 20 people - but there will only be 10 people who attend the entire day, including the photo sessions in the afternoon and the evening. The other 10 people will be those who chose to attend only the seminar presentation in the morning. This way I can make sure of individual attention with each photographer attending the workshop section of the day.
Seminar & Presentation (Morning Session)
Starting at 9 am, there is a presentation on flash photography, lighting and exposure, which is based on the articles on this website. I will answer all questions, and thoroughly cover a variety of topics, which will include:
* White Balance settings
* TTL / Auto flash .. vs .. manual flash
* Exposure metering for ambient light
* Implications of flash sync speed
* Flash modes available with camera systems
* Adding fill-flash to available light outdoors
* Flash indoors
* Directional bounce flash
* Flash modifiers – uses & limitations
* Dragging the shutter
* Tungsten light & flash
* Wireless TTL flash
* Using strobes for portraits, and small studio set-ups
Practical Application (Afternoon / Evening Session)
This portion of the day is 5 hours of hands-on photography to reinforce the information presented at the Seminar & Presentation. There will be 2 models available during the afternoon and evening photo sessions, and each attendee will be given the opportunity to work with the models, together and individually.
Several different lighting situations will be set up and each participant will get to practice the concepts covered in the morning’s presentation. Pocket Wizards will be available for each attendee to use for the off-camera lighting / studio setup. The practical exercises will include:
* Using flash with max sync speed
* Metering for ambient light and fill flash
* Bouncing flash into a reflector as a fill
* Bouncing flash into a reflector as a main light at night
* Using off camera flash / creating a small studio set-up
Attendance at the Practical Application portion of the workshop is limited to 10 people in order to allow everyone plenty of time to work with the models and to get personal feedback.
Cost and Registration
Once the 10 spaces are full, no more registrations will be accepted for the Practical Application portion of the workshop.

This week’s featured photo person spotlight falls on a professional educator, Mark Fitzgerald. Mark’s rich career in the photography industry, his dedication to photography and his deep understanding of digital imaging has made his workshop enterprise, The Digital Darkroom, a mainstay of professional education up and down the Pacific coast.
Mark’s roots in the industry were firmly established during his photo lab career at Fox Photo. (There is no better place to learn photography than in a professional photo lab.) The years at Fox provided Mark with a deep technical understanding of the technology of photography while providing him the resources to polish his skills as a photographer. Eventually Mark moved on to other processing labs and into the field of photographic consulting.
When Mark moved to the Portland area in the 90s, he set aside picture taking to focus on professional lab work. It wasn’t long before Mark picked up his first digital camera and was bitten by the photography bug all over again. Photoshop became his new darkroom with endless hours being spent in self-training and experimentation.
Having mastered Photoshop, it was time to educate the world – well, at least the world west of the Mississippi. The result was the birth of his current business, The Digital Darkroom in 2002. Mark’s hard-earned recognition as an Adobe Certified Photoshop Expert and as an Adobe Certified Instructor for the entire Photoshop CS series is testament to his technical abilities and educational skills.

Mark concentrates his educational workshops and seminars as well as his individual consulting on the working professional photographer. Enhancing a photographer’s understanding of Photoshop and Lightroom while implementing improved workflows to increase business productivity are the cornerstones of his consulting and workshop activities.
Today Mark’s Photoshop and Lightroom workshops are in high demand and allow Oregon to claim another nationally recognized photographic expert. For serious professional photographers looking to improve their digital darkroom skills, increase their shooting time, enhance production efficiency and strengthen their bottom-line, learn more about Mark and the services on The Digital Darkroom website. You can also hear Mark's thoughts about digital imaging, photography and words of technical wisdom on his blog.

- You have an interest in photography
- You use either a digital or film camera
- You have the confidence to use it
- You use either Digital printing, Alternative, B&W or Color
The acknowledgement of passion in one's work is vital to the execution and creation of the work. Passion flows from the moment we are aware of an image that presents itself to us to the time we present the results to those around us - and beyond.
We have this passion deep within us, it drives us to buy (much needed) unique equipment, do (supposedly) strange things, anything to get that image out in the "light of day" so we can start the whole process again.
This workshop is built around you. You have an interest in photography. You have a camera, either digital or film. You know how to use that camera with some confidence. You are either into alternative process, B&W or Color prints. You like to share your work with others or with no one in particular. You like to use the camera to photograph the things that are interesting or important to you.
This workshop is about finding your passion! You will be sharing with others what you are interested in photographing. You’ll be asked to share images, discuss your strong points and take suggestions of where to further your passion. You’ll be asked to offer in return ideas to the others in the workshop and their photography.

Robert Brummitt has been photographing for over 30 years. He is well versed in most film formats and some digital. Mainly a color photographer, Robert has also worked in black and white and, now, digital printing methods. Robert is the past president of the Portland Photographers Forum and increased its membership and photographic activities within the community.
“Passion has always been with me - before I knew what I wanted to do with the beautiful/horrid images that paraded themselves before me as a young child. Photography, printing, passion - they kept me going for ~40 years and I'm not stopping now!” -- Lorraine Richey

The workshop is limited to seven students
Fees: $175.00 + 25 (lab) A $50.00 non-refundable deposit can be made through PayPal using the email address below as the account name. The balance is due at the start of the workshop.
Kurt Norlin is a graduate of Central Washington University (BA, MA) and the University of Oregon (MFA). He has been working with pinhole photography since 1993 and taught at Linn-Benton Community college from 1994 to 2009. To contact Kurt: norlink1@hotmail.com. If you would like to see some of his pinhole work go to http://panowolf.smugmug.com/ and check out the pinhole gallery.

Canon Live Learning Inspires Attendees to Develop Their Personal Creative Vision
LAKE SUCCESS, N.Y., May 12, 2009 - Canon U.S.A. Inc., a leader in digital imaging, today announced the launch of Canon Live Learning, a new on-site education program targeted towards photographers who currently use or are interested in Canon’s popular line of EOS photographic products. Canon Live Learning (CLL) will offer high-quality classes and workshops conducted by a number of the industry’s leading professional photographers, Canon’s Explorers of Light. CLL attendees will learn how to get the most out of their gear while also having the opportunity to try out Canon’s latest line of EOS products.
“Through the Canon Live Learning program we are hoping to empower and inspire our customers to further enhance their skills and passion for the art of imaging,” said Yuichi Ishizuka, senior vice president and general manager, Consumer Imaging Group, Canon U.S.A. “Canon Live Learning adds value to the experience of owning and using Canon photographic products.”
CLL will consist of two distinct educational opportunities: EOS Essentials and EOS Extras. EOS Essentials is a two-day weekend program which will start on Saturday with a mini-conference for participants to learn about a variety of topics, followed by optional hands-on workshops. On Sunday, participants will be organized in smaller groups and take part in workshops conducted by a Canon Explorer of Light professional photographer. The EOS Extras program is a series of exciting, two-day hands-on workshops with a Canon Explorer of Light. Participants will go on location in order to learn about photographic techniques and try Canon’s latest EOS equipment. Potential participants can go online to learn more about each program and register at this Web page:
www.usa.canon.com/canonlivelearning
EOS Essentials
The Canon Live Learning EOS Essentials program is ideal for photographers who are interested in learning how to get the most out of their EOS and other photography equipment. During the first day of the program, four topics will be covered, at approximately 90 minutes per topic. Canon Explorers of Light, local professional photographers and Canon instructors will present each topic through an inspirational blend of on-screen content and live demonstrations. After each presentation, questions and answers will be encouraged to further discussion and elicit new ideas. Topics in 2009 will include: "Creative Lighting with Speedlites," "HD Video with EOS DSLRs," "Landscape/Nature Photography," and "Maximizing Your EOS."
The optional second day of the EOS Essentials program will offer a choice between two different hands-on workshops, each with an attending Explorer of Light photographer and other professional instructors. These workshops will be interactive and limited to 16 participants each. Participants will also be able to try out Canon’s latest line of EOS products during these workshops. Workshop topics will vary according to the location, and are posted on the Canon Live Learning Web site.
In 2009, the Canon EOS Essentials program will be held in the following cities:

June 13, 2009 at the Newport Visual Arts Center
9:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.
Color photography. It is the most common medium in our visual language. Our eyes and minds react to color. Color is used in almost everything we see in our visual world. Christopher Burkett shared, "Through many hours of patient work, the photograph becomes more refined as I labor to bring the luminous quality of the image to life. These are not mechanical reproductions, but images in which I have invested my heart and soul. I love it." I hope to instill in you a love for color photography!
This is a one-day workshop. It will begin, however, with a homework assignment to be completed before we meet. During the day, we will begin by looking at and discussing the work of past and current photographers who apply their vision in color. We will even look at black & white photography that has been hand-colored. I'll also bring samples of hand-colored images of Oregon's Crater Lake. Then we will share and discuss your work. The goal of the discussions will be for each of us to hone our skill.
We will go out and apply what we have learned and shared together. I will bring my camera with Fuji FP-100c film (a type of Polaroid) and conduct some demonstrations of how I operate. But I want you to go out photograph, and then we'll share the results via emails after the workshop.
A little about Robert Brummitt:
I have been working with color photography for over 30 years. I first got into color by working at two commercial photo labs. One in the San Francisco Bay Area and the other in Portland, Oregon. I studied photography at Foothill College in California and have taken workshops from such notables as: John Sexton, Ruth Bernhard and many more West Coast photographers. As President of Portland Photographers' Forum for 12 years, I organized and observed workshops given by: John Wimberley, Martha Casanave, Steve Anchell and again many fine local West Coast photographers.
I love color photography. It has taken me some time to understand why, but I do love it. I have done years and years of black & white photography, and love it as well. But Color has a special place in my soul. I can see color and contrasts better than I can see tones and shades of black & white.
Cost: $75

Congratulations to Portland's own, Susan Seubert, for her selection by National Geographic Expeditions
Froelick Gallery announced today that Susan Seubert has been selected by National Geographic to be the photography expert on their Pacific Northwest expedition scheduled for October 2009.
Susan will be part of a team of experts invited to share their knowledge and insights on the wildlife, landscape and local culture around the Columbia River Gorge. For each expedition, National Geographic hand picks top experts (scientists, historians, writers, photographers, filmmakers, etc.) known to have a passion for a particular region. These experts often help plan the itinerary as well as lead the corresponding trip(s).
National Geographic Expeditions is the travel program of the National Geographic Society. Founded in 1888, the National Geographic Society is one of the world's largest nonprofit scientific and educational organizations.

Jim Altengarten established exposure36 Photography in 1998 to create an organization that provides high quality education in photography. While technical skills are very important, the main focus of the photography workshops and classes is to improve the skill level and creative vision of the participants. A variety of teaching methods combined with patience and non-technical explanations allows exposure36 workshops and classes to create an environment that promotes learning.
Jim's exposure36 Photography Workshops and schedules are detailed below.

A Lensbaby is a selective focus SLR lens which replaces the traditional optical lens on your camera. Photographs made with the Lensbaby have one area in sharp focus, known as a sweet spot, surrounded by an area of gradually increasing blur. You can move the sweet spot to any part of your photo by bending the lens. You can further control the size of the sweet spot by changing the aperture using disks (known as water stops), from f/2.8 to f/22.

Lensbabies are one of the simplest ways to add a completely new dimension to your photography. Even though the Lensbaby may appear to be a toy, and you can certainly have fun with it, it is definitely a tool for the creative photographer. It can be used for portraiture, still life and landscapes. During this one day workshop, participants will practice working with the Lensbaby to become familiar with how it works and the variety of accessories that are available to expand your creativity. We will practice using the Lensbaby for portraiture and still life subjects.
Lensbabies can be used with film or digital cameras.
(This being the Pacific Northwest and the weather always being iffy, we will work indoors if it rains and 1/2 and 1/2 if it is sunny or just overcast.)
Registered participants will receive a discount coupon for 10% off any purchase of a Lensbaby for their particular brand of camera or accessories to accompany the Lensbaby they already have (accessories include wide angle and telephoto lenses, special effects kit, Macro lens, and a creative aperture kit).
If you would like to try a Lensbaby before buying one, there will be loaners available to fit most major cameras (Nikon, Canon, Minolta, etc.). Loaners must be reserved at least one week in advance.
To register go to Anchell Photography & Workshops. Or call 503.375.2163 to speak with Steve.

BOOK DESIGN BASICS
The recent revolution in digital printing now makes it possible to self publish high-quality books inexpensively. At the same time, making books by hand is more popular than ever. In this learn-by-doing class we’ll each design a book in Adobe InDesign and get it ready to publish either by hand or using Blurb.com. We’ll cover the basics of page layout, typography and preparing images for print. Participants will use their own images and text to create a book, and get it ready to upload for printing by an online, print-on-demand publishing site or get it ready for printing on your own printer.
The first day we’ll go over the basics of the InDesign software as well as the principles of good design. Practice and homework will be given, as well as handouts offering step-by-step review of covered skills. We’ll return two weeks later to review, compile and finish the books. Students should be comfortable with basic computer operation and word processing skills like cutting, copying and pasting.

©John Wimberley
Photographer John Wimberley, hailed as “one of America’s pre-eminent landscape photographers”, will offer his three-day workshop Sight and Insight in Ashland, Oregon beginning Friday, June 12, 2009.
A sought after teacher and mentor, John Wimberley brings over 43 years of experience to his workshops. His critically-acclaimed work has been honored with more than 60 major exhibitions, has been published around the world and is represented in hundreds of public and private collections. In 1983 he was chosen to have the first of two, two-man exhibitions with Ansel Adams.
As the State Press wrote: “It is a heightened sensitivity in Wimberley’s work that makes his photographs seem like the original conceptions for the design of the world.”
In Sight & Insight, John Wimberley will present a radical new model for making photographs. Instead of defining pictures as something to be searched for and “taken”, students learn exciting new techniques that allow their personal reflection in the outside world to guide the process. In addition, the effects of cultural conditioning and personal belief systems will be explored. The goal will be for each student's pictures to communicate deeper authenticity and insight.
Student Feedback:
"John, it is always a pleasure to take one of your workshops. You care about your students and too, that they learn. And you are so graciously willing to share your knowledge. You are very well prepared with excellent written materials, and you have thought about the presentation. I always leave your workshops with new information and having thought about things that I had not before contemplated. And I love your quiet, gentle style and your values. It is just a joy to be a participant in one of your workshops." "I did a workshop (Sight & Insight) with John last year in Vancouver, Washington, in the Portland area. I was initially concerned it would be too ethereal, spiritual or whatever phrase one wishes to use but he is terrific and down to earth. He's a real "mensch," friendly, gentle, but also deeply thought provoking. He is a master photographer, a wonderful printer and excellent teacher. I'd recommend it."

3D Center of Art & Photography, 1928 NW Lovejoy, Portland, OR,
Taught by Shab Levy
Remember the View-Master reels you used to have when you were a kid? Remember how much you enjoyed them and how you wished you could make your own without all that expensive equipment which you couldn’t afford then? Well, now you can! Just take the 3D Center of Art & Photograhy's class and we guarantee that by the end of 4 weeks you will be making beautiful custom reels, if you follow the instructions in class.

All you need is a digital camera, which you probably have, and the materials distributed in class, which include special custom made reels on which you mount your own images and a regular View-Master viewer to see the pictures in real (or reel) 3D! The class is based on using Photoshop, so you will need access to this software, or you might be able to use the 3D Center’s software in class.
Only $50 for the whole course of 4 weeks, on 4 consecutive Wednesday evenings. There is an additional materials fee of $7, payable to the instructor, for blank reel and mounting jig.
You must pre-register and pay for the class in advance. If you have any questions about what will be covered in this class or your preparedness for it, please get in touch with Shab directly: shablevy@comcast.net.

| - Greg Rassmussen When: Tuesday, February 24, 2009 Time: 7:00pm Where: Oregon Zoo's Banquet Center Cost: Members of host organizations, students or seniors: $8 Non-members: $10 From nearly half a million animals a hundred years ago, the African painted dog population had dwindled to fewer than 3,000 today, with the animal having been completely wiped out in 25 of the 39 countries where it once resided. There are only four countries left in Africa recognized as having stronghold populations, making research on the species a priority. Greg Rasmussen has spent over 16 years raising awareness about this species and bringing it back from the brink of extinction. His Painted Dog Conservation Project has successfully reduced the mortality rate of the animals by teaching the local people about the true nature of the dogs and employing villagers to collect snares. Entirely funded by donations, the project educates children on the importance of protecting endangered species, supports artisans who make artwork from dismantled snares, and delivers basic computer education to local families and police.
